Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The 17th edition of the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) – the Eastern Hemisphere’s premier multi-society, multi-disciplinary energy event – officially commenced in Kuala Lumpur. Held from 18-20 February 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, IPTC 2025 was proudly hosted by PETRONAS and co-hosted by SLB.
With the theme “Energy for All: Reflect >> Innovate >> Evolve,” IPTC 2025 represented a collective commitment of the industry to advancing innovative solutions, sustainable practices, and energy accessibility for all.
YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah Bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition s Water Transformation, Malaysia officiated the IPTC 2025 Opening Ceremony and said, “Our journey ahead is not without challenges. The energy transition requires bold action, sustained collaboration, and a willingness to embrace change. However, the rewards are immense. It is a future of shared prosperity, environmental stewardship, and energy security for all. As we reflect, innovate, and evolve, let us think boldly, act courageously, and innovate relentlessly. Together we can redefine what is possible, not just for Malaysia or ASEAN, but for the world.”
In his opening address, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of PETRONAS, stated, “The oil, gas and energy industry remains firm in its commitment to deliver reliable, affordable and emissions-abated energy required by the world amid heightened market and geopolitical risks.
“These profound shifts further underscore the urgent need for greater collaboration among players. Such collaboration can accelerate the innovation of technologies much needed to adapt to an evolving ecosystem, while also enabling partners to progress in a financially prudent and strategically agile manner. Strategic partnerships, such as the ones expected to be created over the course of this conference, will play a key role in ensuring that a resilient and sustainable future is attainable for all.”
Over 11,8000 participants from more than 75 countries are registered and expected to participate in IPTC this year. Attendees gained expert insights from business leaders, stayed updated on cutting-edge technologies through a robust technical programme, and explored the latest innovations at the exhibition. The eventprovided a dynamic platform for collaboration, strategic partnerships, and discussions that aimed to drive long-term, sustainable growth in the energy sector.
With a world-class conference programme of over 420 speakers, the event included CEO and executive dialogues, business and industry leader panels, guru-led forums, and over 45 multidisciplinary technical and digital poster sessions showcasing over 300 subject matter experts. Upholding IPTC’s legacy of excellence, this year’s sessions focused on emerging technologies, best practices, and technical solutions to harness the industry’s most exciting opportunities and address its challenges.
Most notably, the conference featured leading sessions headlined by key industry leaders – Mohd Jukris Abdul Wahab, Executive Vice President C CEO, Upstream, PETRONAS; Adif Zulkifli, Executive Vice President C CEO, Gas C Maritime Business, PETRONAS; Montri Rawanchaikul, Chief Executive Officer, PTTEP; Olivier Le Peuch, Chief Executive Officer, SLB; Khaled Al Mogharbel, Executive Vice President, Geographies, SLB; Dr. Ali A. Al-Meshari, Senior Vice President Technology, Oversight C Coordination, Aramco; and Helle Kristoffersen, Member of the Executive Committee, President Asia, TotalEnergies. These industry leaders shared their reflections on the sector, insights into the energy transition and sustainability, and strategies for navigating an evolving global landscape.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Dr. Pinal Yilmaz, IPTC Board Chair, said, “IPTC’s mission is to serve as a vital hub for geoscientists and engineers, fostering collaboration on integrated technical solutions.”
IPTC 2025 also celebrated outstanding contributions to the energy industry through the IPTC Excellence Awards.
This year’s recipients included:
- Eni’s Coral South FLNG project – recipient of the Project Excellence Award, recognising its role in establishing Mozambique as an LNG exporter and delivering economic and social benefits, including the creation of over 800 local jobs and improvements in healthcare and
- Aramco’s Sea Water Injection Department Journey – recipient of the Sustainability Excellence Award, acknowledged for conserving billions of gallons of groundwater and enhancing energy efficiency through digitalisation and renewable
- Montri Rawanchaikul, CEO of PTTEP – honoured with the Distinguished Achievement Award for his visionary leadership in transforming PTTEP into a global energy leader, driving technological innovations, sustainability, and
- Young Professional Achievement Award Recipients – Sun Zhe, Fengyuan Zhang, Braden Gilbert and Nihal Darraj were recognised for their dedicated contributions to the energy industry.
Beyond its executive and technical sessions, IPTC is also dedicated to talent development, diversity, and knowledge-sharing through initiatives such as the Diversity, Equity C Inclusion Insights programme, the Emerging Leaders Workshop for young professionals, the University Student Programme, and the Energy Education Workshop for high school and university students. These programmes reflect IPTC’s ongoing efforts to equip the next generation – the energy explorers and innovators of the future – with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the evolving energy landscape.
