Shell Global Solutions International B.V. and Air Products and Chemicals,Inc have formed a strategic alliance to promote residue gasification for refinery complexes.
Combining Shell Global Solutions’ expertise in refining technologies and refinery configuration with Air Products’ proven track record in building, operating and maintaining highly-reliable industrial gas facilities, the alliance is set to offer a wider range of solutions to help refineries enhance flexibility and profitability.
The alliance will leverage Shell’s technology leadership in residue gasification. The Shell Gasification Process (SGP) is a clean, efficient, reliable and proven technology. When integrated with other upgrading and treating technologies, it can convert a wide range of low-value refinery residues and asphaltenes into syngas for: integrated gasification combined-cycle powergeneration with optional carbon dioxide capture; hydrogen production via water–gas shift; and petrochemical production. It also creates the opportunity to use heavier, less expensive crudes and benefit from deeper conversion. More than 170 SGP reactors have been built and 96 are operating today.
Air Products will offer complete sale-of-gas residue gasification facilities to the refining industry and will be a project operating partner for the supply of industrial gases under the strategic alliance. The financed, owned and operated gasification facilities can help customers benefit from reduced project complexity and capital outlay, with the potential for a faster return on investment.
Shell Global Solutions will continue to license its residue gasification technology as part of its refining technology portfolio in parallel to the sale-of-gas option.Andy Gosse, Vice President of Catalyst Sales, Manufacturing and Technical Licensing for Shell Global Solutions, said “Both organisations have areas of complementary operational, technical and market expertise and by combining our respective areas of expertise and capabilities, we hope to improve the potential offers and support we can provide to customers in the future.”
As part of the same deal, Shell Global Solutions International B.V. has divested its Coal Gasification business, including patents for solids (coal and biomass) gasification, to Air Products. In addition to its alliance with Shell Global Solutions in residue gasification, the coal gasification technology will be included in a new syngas solutions product offering from Air Products.
